Things I’d Love To Learn – Listmania Week 7

The Week 7 Listmania prompt:

“What things do you dream (or plan) of learning about in your life? This could be anything from a craft to a life lesson.”  (Listmania at Home Life Simplified)

car_autoOkay, so I can’t honestly answer this week’s prompt without mentioning the major life skill I don’t possess …

I can’t drive.

I don’t hold an open driver’s licence.

I’d love to be able to drive, but have never been able to get past the anxiety and fear to do so.

My husband has been wonderfully understanding and supportive about this and is helping me to build my confidence to get there, slowly. So the most major item on my list that I’d love to learn is how to drive.

Aside from that, there are so many things I’d love to learn to do or just learn about. The list keeps growing, especially on days where I’ve been on Pinterest!

Here’s four more things I’m currently learning about or thinking about learning:

  • All the library-related things I need to study to become qualified. It’s helping that so far I’ve been really interested in all the topics we’ve covered.
  • How to make a patchwork quilt – this is one of the things on my bucket list, to make a special patchwork quilt for our bed with important dates and memories embroidered in to it.
  • How to use an overlocker – no idea how they work, but I’m sure I could put the skills to good use. I’d love to be able to quickly and easily make shorts for my son (so that I can keep up with how fast he grows out of them!), pajama pants, boxer shorts for hubby, library bags, swimming bags, doggie coats and doggie beds, pillowcases and cushion covers, and the list goes on … I can already (kind of) do all of these with the sewing machine, but it would be cool to learn how to on an overlocker too.
  • How to let go of “stuff”, ie. our junk and clutter. Working hard on this one, and learning heaps about why we have all the “stuff” to start with and how to remove it from our lives.

{Side-thought: Was just thinking how funny it is that two of the things that popped into my head were sewing related when I’m much more a papercraft type person, but then realised that both are part of or contribute to my vision of an organised but cosy home.}

This prompt also really got me thinking about one of the core ideas we promote at the library – the idea of lifelong learning. That it’s important to be always improving your skills and keeping yourself current, especially with the way jobs and careers have changed.

One of the bits I love about the whole concept of lifelong learning is that it doesn’t necessarily have to be formal training or a specifically work-related skill. It could be like my wanting to learn how to make a patchwork quilt. While I’m learning the specific skill I’m also keeping my mind active and utilising a heap of “invisible” skills – I’m exercising my problem solving skills, my ability to focus, comprehension and following of instructions, research skills to find those instructions in the first place, organisational skills, communication and a myriad of other skills required to complete the project.

You can see from this why it’s so important to stay curious and keep learning new things – it’s about far more than what you initially set out to learn, it’s all the extra stuff you learn and practice along the way. And the most exciting part of all? Nowadays if you want to learn something new there’s likely to be a free tutorial just a few clicks away on the web or on the bookshelf at the library, making the whole idea of lifelong learning as easy as.

Your turn – what would you most like to learn?

  1. another late to driving person here – i took lessons when pregnant with my oldest as my husband said we could not move to a house until i could drive! so glad i did it finally and know you can too! i was scared for so long but the thing with driving is it does get easier over time – i still remember my lessons and my instructor making me let go of my death grip on the wheel to steer with one finger!!! i thought he was insane!

    • I know so many women my age who don’t drive and never had, it’s often surprising. I’ve been working at it, slowly. Last year I got my learner licence again and hubby bought a small automatic car to make it easier for me. Now that Mr Four is at Kindy and I have some child-free time I need to book some professional lessons. Still terrified about it all, but so glad to hear it gets easier over time!

  2. I am in awe of how many women don’t drive, must stop assuming, I never judge, am working on the assuming bit, especially since I preach to my students that they must not assume as it makes an ass of you and me xx

  3. Good luck with the learning to drive – it can be scary – I still freak out at times when it’e heaps busy and i’ve been driving over 18 years!
I need to learn to get rid of junk and clutter too!
